CIW Cleaning Schedule Checklist

What inspectors check regarding hygiene at Welsh nurseries

Is your cleaning schedule CIW-ready?

Inspectors don't just look around — they ask for documentation. When was the fridge last cleaned? Who signed off on yesterday's toilet cleaning? Where's your toy sanitizing log?

This checklist shows you exactly what CIW expects — daily tasks, weekly deep cleans, and the records you need to keep.

💧 Daily Cleaning Tasks

Toilets and potties cleaned and disinfected After each use + end of day

Use appropriate disinfectant. Potties must be emptied, washed, and disinfected immediately after use.

Nappy changing area sanitized After each change

Changing mat wiped with disinfectant after every nappy change. No exceptions. This is a top CIW concern.

How Wootzoo solves this: Log nappy changes digitally with one tap. Creates automatic hygiene audit trail.
All floors swept/vacuumed and mopped End of day

Pay attention to corners, under furniture, and high-traffic areas.

Tables and chairs wiped down Before/after meals + end of day

Use food-safe sanitizer on eating surfaces. Clean highchair trays and straps thoroughly.

Door handles and light switches disinfected Twice daily minimum

High-touch surfaces are key infection control points. Inspectors notice these.

Bins emptied and liners replaced End of day (or when full)

Nappy bins should have foot-operated lids and be emptied more frequently.

Sleep mats/cots wiped down After each use

Bedding must be individual to each child. Launder weekly or immediately if soiled.

Handwashing stations stocked Check twice daily

Soap, paper towels, and sanitizer always available. Check child-height sinks.

🧸 Toy & Equipment Cleaning

Mouthed toys removed and sanitized Immediately

Toys that go in mouths must be removed from play, cleaned, and dried before reuse. No exceptions.

Plastic toys washed and disinfected Weekly

Dishwasher-safe toys can be machine washed. Others wiped with disinfectant solution.

Soft toys and dress-up clothes laundered Weekly

Wash at 60°C minimum. Remove any soft toys that cannot be washed.

Outdoor equipment wiped/hosed down Weekly + after rain

Check for bird droppings, debris, and standing water. Inspectors check outdoor areas too.

Sand/water trays emptied and cleaned Sand weekly / Water daily

Water trays must be emptied daily. Check sand for contamination before each use.

🍽️ Food Preparation Areas

Kitchen surfaces sanitized before and after food prep Every use

Use food-safe sanitizer. Separate cloths for kitchen (colour-coded system recommended).

Fridge temperature checked and logged Twice daily

Must be 0-5°C. Record in temperature log book. Report any issues immediately.

How Wootzoo solves this: Digital temperature logging with alerts if readings are out of range.
Fridge cleaned out, expired items removed Weekly

Check dates on all items. Clean shelves and drawers with food-safe cleaner.

Dishcloths and tea towels replaced Daily

Use fresh cloths daily. Launder at 60°C or use disposable cloths.

Bottles and feeding equipment sterilized After each use

Follow manufacturer guidance. Sterilizing solution replaced as directed.

📅 Weekly & Monthly Deep Clean

Skirting boards and window sills wiped Weekly

Dust builds up quickly. Check for cobwebs in corners. Inspectors notice the details.

Windows cleaned (child height) Weekly

Children touch windows constantly. Clean inside at child level weekly.

Carpets and rugs deep cleaned Monthly

Vacuum daily, but deep clean/shampoo monthly or more if needed. Stained carpets fail inspections.

Air vents and fans cleaned Monthly

Dust buildup affects air quality. Include extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchens.

🔍 What CIW Inspectors Check

Written cleaning schedules displayed and followed

Inspectors look for documented schedules with evidence of completion (initials/signatures).

Cleaning products stored safely and COSHH compliant

All chemicals locked away, out of children's reach, with safety data sheets available.

Colour-coded cleaning equipment in use

Different colours for toilets, kitchen, general areas. Prevents cross-contamination.

Staff trained in infection control procedures

Inspectors may ask staff about cleaning protocols. Everyone should know the basics.

No visible dirt, grime, or unpleasant odours

First impressions matter. Inspectors notice dirty corners, stained carpets, and smells.

"We used to have paper cleaning checklists all over the place — some got lost, some weren't filled in properly. Now everything's logged in Wootzoo. Last inspection, the inspector commented on how organised our hygiene records were."
— Rhiannon Thomas, Deputy Manager, Little Dragons Nursery

Common Cleaning Questions from CIW

Do we need a separate cleaning schedule for each room?

Best practice is yes. Different areas have different cleaning needs. A kitchen needs different attention than a play room. Room-specific schedules show inspectors you're thorough.

How long should we keep cleaning records?

Keep at least 12 months of records. Inspectors may ask to see historical documentation to verify consistent cleaning practices.

What's the colour-coded cleaning system?

Standard colours: Red = toilets/bathrooms, Blue = general areas, Green = kitchen, Yellow = clinical areas. Prevents cross-contamination and shows CIW you're serious about hygiene.

What happens if we fail on hygiene?

CIW can issue a non-compliance notice requiring immediate action. Serious or repeated issues can affect your registration. The good news: most hygiene issues are easily preventable with good documentation.
